Background of the study
Oil exploration activities have long been associated with environmental degradation, particularly concerning water resources. In Bonny Local Government Area, extensive oil exploration has led to contamination of water bodies through accidental spills, leakages, and the discharge of toxic substances (Ibeh, 2023). These activities jeopardize water quality, affecting both aquatic ecosystems and the health of local communities that rely on these resources for domestic and agricultural purposes. Studies conducted recently indicate that pollutants from oil exploration not only disrupt aquatic life but also accumulate in the food chain, posing long-term health risks (Akpan, 2024). The challenges associated with managing water quality in oil-rich regions are compounded by inadequate regulatory frameworks and limited infrastructure for water treatment. This study investigates the direct and indirect impacts of oil exploration on water resources in Bonny, aiming to provide evidence-based recommendations for improved water management and environmental protection. The research will also examine community coping strategies and potential policy interventions that could mitigate the adverse effects on water quality (Udo, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Oil exploration in Bonny has resulted in significant water resource contamination, leading to adverse environmental and public health consequences. The current water management practices and regulatory measures are insufficient to address the contamination, putting local communities at risk. Urgent interventions are needed to restore water quality and protect both ecosystems and human health (Chinedu, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  • To assess the extent of water contamination caused by oil exploration.
  • To evaluate the impacts on aquatic ecosystems and community health.
  • To propose remedial and policy measures for water resource management.

Research questions

  • What is the level of water contamination in Bonny due to oil exploration?
  • How does oil exploration impact aquatic ecosystems and public health?
  • What remedial measures can improve water quality?

Research Hypotheses

  • H1: Oil exploration significantly contaminates water resources in Bonny.
  • H2: Contaminated water adversely affects aquatic biodiversity and human health.
  • H3: Implementing stricter regulatory measures will improve water quality.

Significance of the study
This study is crucial as it highlights the environmental and health impacts of oil exploration on water resources. Its findings will inform policy reforms and remediation strategies, contributing to sustainable water management in oil-rich regions.

Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to the assessment of the impact of oil exploration on water resources in Bonny Local Government Area, Rivers State.

Definitions of terms

  • Oil exploration: The process of searching for oil deposits and extracting petroleum.
  • Water resources: Natural water bodies used for domestic, agricultural, or industrial purposes.
  • Contamination: The presence of harmful substances in water that degrade its quality.
